INSTRUCTIONS FOR MID WEEK LEAGUE RACE SERIES 2016 AT HITCHIN

Hitchin Rugby Club
King George Playing Fields
Old Hale Way
Hitchin
Hertfordshire, SG5 1XL
Race Location

PARKING:

There are approximately 50 spaces in the car park. This is unlikely to be enough for all the runners likely to participate. Please look to park on the roads on Old Hale Way, Strathmore Avenue and Brampton Park Road. There is no parking at the start line.

COURSE DETAILS:

The clubhouse to the main start is just under 1km. Please allow 5-10 minutes to get to the start line, depending on how quick you are. The map below details the route to the start.

route to start

TERRAIN:

It is a mixture of Tarmac and trails with a small section of cross country, this year there is more tarmac and less trails sections. Blue sections are roads. The route is roughly 10km and has been measured via satellite navigation.

HAZARDS:

ALL OF THE ROUTES ARE POPULAR WITH DOG WALKERS AND HORSES, SO PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT ALTHOUGH IT IS A RACE, WE STILL NEED TO PUT SAFETY FIRST, SO PLEASE RESPECT THE LOCALS AND DO YOUR BEST TO AVOID THEM! WE WILL HAVE LOTS OF MARSHALS AT KEY POINTS, SUCH AS ROAD SECTIONS AND km MARKERS. PLEASE DO NOT LITTER AS THEY CAUSE A HAZARD TO OTHERS. AT THE TIME OF EVENING THAT THE RACE WILL BE ON, WE DO NOT EXPECT MANY WALKERS BUT NEVER SAY NEVER! THERE ARE ALSO A FEW HORSE GATES TO RUN OVER SO PLEASE WATCH YOUR STEP AS THEY HAVE RAISED BORDERS ABOUT 30cm HIGH AND SOME HAVE STUMPS IN THE GROUND. THESE ARE TO STOP MOTORCYCLISTS USING THE TRACKS. WE EXPECT NONE! MARSHALS WILL BE AT ALL KEY POINTS OF POTENTIAL HAZARDS TO WARN YOU. WE WILL OPEN ANY GATES WHERE POSSIBLE TO AVOID GOING OVER ANY BARRIERS AND STUMPS.

POST RACE FOOD & DRINKS:

Back at the Rugby clubhouse (Race HQ) we will be holding food and drinks. These will be outside weather permitting.

There will also be tea, coffee and water available. The bar will be open for those wanting a pint with their food.

Please leave the area as you found it so that we can protect the environment. The less the disruption we cause the more likely we can hold this race in the future.

SUMMER MID-WEEK LEAGUE

Just in case you are not aware of the Summer mid-week league (MWL)
What is MWRRL?
Don’t be afraid by the ‘League Race’ words in the title. If you can run 10km, then come along – we want to get as many runners out to these events as possible.
The MWRRL is a series of local road races of approx 10km taking place on evenings in May/June/July between running clubs in Hertfordshire. Most races start at 7.45pm.
There are four races which count towards the league and then a final run called the Mob Match where the prizes are handed out. You don’t have to do all the races in the series – if you just want to do one, just do one.
We don’t pick a team for these races, the races are for all club members.
You can turn up on the day for these events. All you need to do is make sure you wear Club colours, or at least a vest/T-shirt with Broxbourne Runners on it (if you do not have one Ralph can provide one at a small charge). If you request it before, or at your first race, you will be given a race number which you must keep for the whole series .
Why do these races?
They are good races, not too big, local and they don’t tie up a weekend! They are also part of the Club Championship .
Getting to the events
Close to the events, further details will be sent out on the Club email. Car sharing will be organised from the Club-house. Watch the Club emails for details.

Watford Cross Country Sunday December 7th 10:30.

The next Sunday league race is race number 3. This will be in Watford, with two laps in Whippendell Wood.

The start/ finish will be in Cassiobury Park. These will be located near the Cha restaurant.

The start/finish in the park is ideally placed for travel on the Metropolitan Underground Line, with Watford Junction 1.3 miles away.

The race start/finish is located near Shepherds Way entrance: http://cassioburypark.info/directions-to-cassiobury-park

Toilets are available for the men in the football changing facility near the entrance to the park from Shepherds Road. Ladies only please, can use The Cha.
There are more toilets, mens and ladies, at the bottom of the park near the paddling pool. Ideal for those warming up or looking at the course.

There is ample street parking near the park, access from Hempstead Road.

There is very limited  parking at WEST HERTS SPORTS CLUB: West Herts Sports Club, 8 Park Avenue, Watford, WD18 7HP.
Mens and ladies toilets are available at West Herts.
Hot food is available in the members bar after the run. We have no dedicated area.
We have access to a few showers but not enough for all.

The course, starts and finishes in the same place. The start is the same as earlier this year. The course will be the same as previous years without the final run up the park to finish. We will run out to Whippendell Wood. From the bottom of a steep hill the runners will start their 2 laps. On completion of the second lap the runners will head back up the hill and return to the finish, reverse of the outward leg.

It will be muddy. Trail shoes and studs should be enough, if you have runners wishing to wear spikes, they should be aware that there are the bridge crossings to be made, out and back.

Please be aware that major plant has been in operation in the wood. Some of the wheel tracks are very wide and deep.

The course is about 5.7miles.

We anticipate a shelter being erected near the finish as a baggage area, unsupervised. Watford Joggers are hosting the event supported by Ealing Eagles.
We look forward to a competitive race.

Fraternity Cup and Sorority Cup

The Fraternity Cup was first presented by Hampstead Harriers in 1931 and for almost a century has been contested by North London clubs in a spirit of brotherhood. Many of the clubs named on the trophy have merged or fallen by the wayside, but the annual race remains an important date in the cross country calendar. The Sorority Cup has been added for ladies and both competitions are held as a single race.

2014 will be the 81st running of the race and once again the hilly course will be a great test for all who come to take it on. The current hosts Barnet & District have expanded the invitation to several clubs who are new to the Fraternity Cup so the competition should be even fiercer.

Join us on 29 November 2014 and see if your club can get their name on the trophy! You can see the list of past winners here.

Date. Saturday 29 November 2014.

The first race of The Sunday Xc League 2014 / 2015 is at Cheshunt Park on Sunday 26th October.

As hosts to this race , apart from having Ladies and Mens teams , we need to provide Marshals for the course and set up the course signage and remove afterwards.

We need.

  • Ladies and Mens teams.
  • People to set up the course and remove afterwards.  We need about 6 – 8 people for this, starting at 8:30 PROMPT at the car park.
  • MARSHALS.  Andy Tant is organising this vital role.  We need an absolute minimum of 10 people.  These can be from the people setting up the course and MUST HAVE MOBILE PHONES WITH THEM to contact the First Aiders if necessary who will  be in attendance,  Contact Andy  by email at  andytant@hotmail.co.uk  ( and copy John at  john.nugent1@ntlworld.com  ) or phone 07983 406830.

MWL – Race 3 – Harlow 18th June 2014 – Details:

The race HQ is at Mark Hall Sports Centre, London Road, Harlow CM17 9LR.
Parking is very limited, so it is imperative that runners share transport. Please park in the adjacent Mark Hall School (on the B183 on the Club map) or in the nearby Fawbert & Barnard School (left off the roundabout at the junction of the B183 and London Road on the map) as there are other activities on at the Sports Centre.

Please see the Club’s location map at http://www.thehrc.org.uk/

You can walk directly around the back of Mark Hall School into the Sports Centre and the Club HQ is at the rear of the building. If you approach the Sports Centre from the main car park, please pass to the left of the building and do not use the main entrance.

Most importantly, remember that the start and finish location is about 1k from the Sports Centre, so allow enough time to get to the start for 7.45. There is no parking at this location, so we throw in this warm up/down jog for free.

AGM and CLUB COMMITTEE for 2013-14

The next club annual general meeting takes place on Sunday 22nd September 2013 in the club room in Broxbourne Sports Club at 12.30 pm. This is an event we hope you can attend.

One of the agenda items at that meeting is to elect the committee members for 2013-14. To date the following members will not be standing for next year:

  • John Nugent – Chairman
  • Ralph Wheeler – Treasurer
  • Sharon Rider – Membership secretary
  • Mike East – Secretary

I can assure you that this is not a concerted mass resignation; each member has their own reason for standing down.

After a number of years having a stable committee membership, this situation creates a vacuum and the remaining members of the committee will need support through new committee members to ensure the club can be successfully run. At the same time, it provides opportunities for fresh ideas about how the club should be managed and organised.

We are therefore asking you to consider joining the committee from September in one of the above roles, or indeed, one of the other roles. Current roles are as follows:

Chairman – vacant
Treasurer – vacant
Membership secretary – vacant
Secretary – vacant
Social secretary – currently filled by Zoe
Ladies’ representative – currently filled by Siobhan
Website coordinator x 2 – currently filled by Paul & Derek
General committee member x 2 – one currently filled by Andy, one vacant

Please click here to link to a document outlining the elements associated with the each of the vacancies. All those standing down have expressed their willingness to provide a thorough handover to whomever takes on their role.

As well as specific roles, all committee members get involved in the planning and organisation of various club events. Currently, and in summary, these are as follows:

Hosting Cheshunt cross country fixture
Co-hosting Welwyn Garden City midweek league race
Supporting Lea Valley 10k
Organising the monthly club handicap
Annual presentations
AGM
Tour of Broxbourne and club relay
Social events

If you are considering standing for one of the posts, please talk to committee members to find out more. If, after that, you have decided to stand please let Mike know.

Thank you.

BROXBOURNE RUNNERS

IMPORTANT NOTICE

SUNDAY 14TH JULY 2013

There are no club training runs on the Sunday morning of 14th July. Instead members are expected to marshal at the Lea Valley 10 k and Fun Run.

Members should meet at 9.00 a.m. at the River Lee Showground Site, in the Lea Valley Park between Waltham Cross and Waltham Abbey, next to the Olympic canoe slalom site.

For environmental and practical reasons, it is recommended you cycle to the site.

Park authority staff will provide a full briefing before the race starts at 10 am. Once the course is clear, you can return to the Showground Site for free food, refreshments and a T shirt.

I have attached a copy of the Race Marshall Brief LV10k 2013 for your guidance and information.

John Nugent has previously canvassed for names. If you have not already signed up, please let me know as soon as possible by e-mail so that we can meet our target of at least 20 marshals. If you can commit your friends and relatives to assist as well, I am sure their support will also be appreciated.

In return for our support, the Lea Valley Park Authority makes a significant donation to club funds. Apart from club subscriptions, this is the only current alternative source of income.

Thank you to those who have already signed up to marshall. If you are still to confirm one way or the other, I hope you can support this event.

Midweek Road Race Series – Division 2 – Race 4

Wednesday 26 June 2013 – Welwyn Garden City

We look forward to seeing you on 26 June.

As in 2011, the Race HQ will be the Welwyn Rugby Club.

Location

Changing facilities are at the Clubhouse of Welwyn Rugby Football Club, which is in Hobbs Way, off Colgrove, in Welwyn Garden City, post code AL8 6HX.

As usual, the start and finish will be on Stanborough Green.

Attached is a map of the course, which also shows the Race HQ.  Both the course and Race HQ are easily accessed from Junction 4 of the A1(M).  For those wishing to travel by public transport, the Rugby Club is within walking distance of the rail and bus stations – approximately 1 mile.

There will be parking at the Rugby Club.  Please try to avoid parking on Stanborough Green as it annoys the residents and impedes the smooth running of the race.

Refreshments will be available at WRFC Clubhouse after the race.  There is a bar.

The Race

Will be 5 miles long.  It is a two-lap course.  The race starts at 19:45.

Safety

Both for your own benefit and to help us ensure the future of the road racing in the County, it is essential that it be concluded safely.  I would therefore request that you adhere to the following guidelines:

You are primarily responsible for your own safety and are reminded to remain alert to the dangers around you, in particular those posed by traffic;

Please do not congregate or warm up on roads;

Please run on the pavement wherever possible and take care at road crossings.  If you do have to step into the road, do not overtake or run two or more abreast;

Please observe instructions given to you by the Police or marshals.

Good Neighbour

In the interests of maintaining good relations with the local residents, please be considerate in you behaviour generally and, in particular do not block any entrances or drives when you park.

Volunteers Required

We are looking for up to 12 volunteers to act as marshals on the night at WGC.

If the race is going to be a success and safe to run then we need to fill all of the marshaling
posts on the course.

It is priority that we fill our allocation, so, if you have not run in all of the previous races in league we would like you to
marshal or can provide a marshal
(i.e partners, wives /husbands or teenage children or even aged parents) more than one would be excellent.

Even if you were not intending running on the night it would a great help if you turn-up and marshal.

Please let Paul know asap (by e-mail) if you can marshal or provide a marshal(s) for this event.

Food For The Event

Just a little reminder that as we share this race, we also share the catering
aspect. We have all enjoyed a good spread at the other clubs mid week league
races and its now our turn!

I know some people are busy with work but
don’t think you cannot contribute by bringing Jaffa cakes, Kipling cakes (get
the essentials in first), bags of crisps, bananas, apples.

Obviously for those with more time on their hands we would be grateful of trays of sarnies,
sausage rolls, etc

Please let Zoe know what you intend to bring to ensure we have a wide spread of items.

We have to cater for 120 people (half the entrants) so it’s important we all do our bit.

Cars can be parked at one of the car parks in and around Fairland’s Valley Lakes. The link below will take you to Google Maps so that you can view all the car parks in the vicinity. There is also a map at the end of the document.

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=215747461498528938548.0004bae5dc28bd7577557&msa=0&mid=1365953640

If you park in the residential areas near the school you will find the roads are very congested, please do not block any drives or cause any bottlenecks with inconsiderate parking. You will be ticketed if you park over kerbs.

Race HQ

This will be in the Sports block behind the main school block. The main entrance to the school is now off Brittain Way. To get to Race HQ follow the blue arrows on the map.

Changing

Adequate changing and showers for men and women are available at the Marriotts Sports Centre, which is part of the school. There are toilets at the race HQ and also in the Sports Centre.

Course

One lap, starting a short walk (1200metres) from the school and finishing in Fairland’s Valley Park alongside the children’s play area. The race is run entirely on the Stevenage cycle-ways & footpaths, after a downhill start it is a mainly flat course throughout. Accurately measured 10k course.

Please keep to the cycle-ways/footpaths and follow the marshals’ instructions especially at crossing points.

Start

On the cycle way in Fairlands Way opposite Bedwell Crescent and in line with the waste bin and in the middle of the two water signs DV 225 & SV225.

Finish

In Fairland’s Valley Park opposite the children’s play area. (600metres from HQ)

Refreshments

Sandwiches etc. will be available in the hall afterwards. Water will be available at the finish.
